This week I’m answering a question that came from a webinar that I did recently for my Crafter Community and it was – what social media platform should I concentrate on as an Etsy seller?
SO MANY PLATFORMS, SO LITTLE TIME!
So when you think about it there are so many social media platforms out there at the moment and it can be a little bit confusing trying to figure out exactly which ones are worth your time.
And a mistake that a lot of Etsy sellers or craft business owners make is trying to be everywhere at once and honestly, most of you guys have families you might even have jobs, and you’ve got an Etsy store to run.
You really don’t need to be trying to master facebook, and pinterest, and twitter, and instagram, and google plus all at the same time.
How to Pick A Social Media Site To Promote An Etsy Shop
So the first thing you need to think about is which platform you need to concentrate on and I suggest just picking one or two. First thing we need to do is think about where your audience is at and then go there.
Are they on facebook?
Are they on pinterest?
Are they hanging out on twitter or google plus, or is there an industry of related forum that they are all hanging out in, instead?
So have a think about it, think about where you have conversations to do with your business the most and choose one of those.
CONSIDER AT LEAST ONE OF THESE…
I would suggest that facebook and pinterest are actually high on your list.
They are my picks for the top two social media platforms especially if you have female target market, if you have items and products to sell that appeal to females chance are they are on facebook and chances are they are on pinterest.
It’s the two platforms that I focused on the most and its where I have the most social media success.
Now, this could be different for you. I know an Etsy seller who’s doing great things in twitter and I also know some people who are loving instagram at the moment.
So it’s up to you just to sit back and think about where it is that you are going to find your target market.
WHERE ALL THE PEOPLE ARE
Facebook’s an interesting one.
There’s actually over a billion Facebook accounts at the moment so Facebook needs to make your list no matter what just because of the shear number that they have it means that your target market will probably be on there.
Just a suggestion!
PICK ONE OR TWO AND GET STARTED
Once you have had think about where you audience is, where you target market is, and where they’re hanging out, pick one or two, three at the very very most.
Learn how to use Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram or whatever it is that you think is best to begin with. And then concentrate all of your efforts there.
And by efforts I mean you’re building your social media presence on that platform but the most important thing you need to remember as you do that is that social media is a borrowed space so you can concentrate on building massive following but you need to have somewhere for them to go.
ULTIMATELY SEND THEM TO YOUR OWN SPACE
So just keep that in mind as you are building these followings and as you are using these social media platforms drive people to your Etsy store, to your website or to your email list and that’s the key because you can build massive followings only to have your social media accounts banned or even hacked.
The key is to build up your following and along the way encourage them to join you in some space that you do own like your own website or an email list because an email list is something that is yours and in the long-term it’s actually a lot safer than putting all of your eggs in facebook’s basket.
But having said that, I do think that social media is a very very important part of your marketing, for Etsy sellers most especially.
If you just start with one or two, three at the very most, and then focus your efforts on those you’ll have the results that you are looking for.
I hope I answered that social media platform question and if you wanna hear more Q&A questions every week, sign up to the Craftercoach VIP Newsletter list and I’ll make sure you don’t miss one. Bye for now!
